I’ve been in Marie Forleo’s B-School for the past 8 weeks. In fact, it’s about to end this week .
She’s all about creating a business and life you love – which I’m all also about!
Her online business program actually has not only impacted my professional life but my personal life as well.
How? Well, one thing – I’ve been reminded how important it is to find YOUR PEOPLE.
What do I mean by “your people”? I mean people who can support and nurture the dream or desire you’re pursuing.
And “your people” are usually people who are following or have followed the same dream.
Now, let me ask you….
Do you feel crazy or even annoying around your friends or family when talking about your interest?
Are they telling you how your dream is just a dream – but nothing to truly embark on?
Are they telling you you’re wasting your time trying to do something you actually care about?
If so, this is a clear sign you need to find “your people”.
It’s sadly too easy to find people that think your interest or idea is beyond crazy, naive and well – just a plain and stupid thing to focus your time and energy on.
You can find these people pretty much anywhere.
It takes no special skill or talent to deny or crush someone’s interest.
But believe me, you can find the people who will think your interest or idea is beyond amazing, exciting and even life transforming!
But you can’t just find them anywhere. You do have to be strategic.
But that really isn’t that challenging.
To better understand how – I want to share with you just how I found “my people” recently.
While working through Marie Forleo’s B-School, I’ve been able to get to know people all over the world who also want to build a business they truly are passionate about.
But have done so just online.
I’ve been itching to meet some of my classmates who also lived in Los Angeles.
I actually tried to see who’d be interested meeting in person on our Facebook group about mid-way through the program, but didn’t get the response I was looking for.
Initially, I felt discouraged but knew there had to be people available and in fact eager to meet.
So, I decided to go ahead and create an official event inviting people who lived in Los Angeles to come and chat!
It took maybe 30 minutes of my time to plan.
I posted my event on our Facebook group, and ended up having 11 sign-ups filled with comments how eager and excited people were to meet!
Now, not all 11 showed – but 6 did.
And those 6 who showed, were such lovely kind hardworking women and of course in the same exact business course, struggling with similar fears but exciting breakthroughs.
Aka – I successfully found my people!
Now you might be saying – “Well, ‘my people’ don’t live by me.”
Trust me – “your people” are around. Maybe not in the same town, but maybe the next town up!
You can create an event (on meetup.com) or a group (also on meetup.com or Facebook) to find them!
That’s what my friend, Laura did.
Laura is a dear friend of mine who I met at a vegan meetup almost a year ago. This vegan meetup wasn’t close to Laura, in fact, all the vegan meetups weren’t.
She’s from Ventura, so it takes her about a 1.5 hour to get to Los Angeles.
And after each meetup in Los Angeles, she’d go back to Ventura knowing she wouldn’t see many of these people for a while.
But she knew there had to be other vegans in Ventura to meet.
Flash forward a year – she, her boyfriend and two of her friends officially created the Hangry Vegans Potluck in Ventura!
They marketed on Facebook and Instagram – and got themselves in local newspapers.
And guess what! They sold-out of their 300 tickets.
Laura went from knowing a few vegans in Ventura to now hundreds!
I know these two examples are about meeting people face-to-face, but it’s because I find this the most fun and great way to really connect and learn from “your people!”.
But, don’t be discouraged.
Even creating a Facebook group, YouTube channel or any other group online to get more people like you – around you – is FREAKING AWESOME!
At the end of the day, I want you to find “your people” so you indeed have support and not called crazy all the time.
If you do find yourself stuck finding your people…
Ask yourself right now:
- How would I describe “my people”? What kind of people do I need and want to meet in order to gain support and guidance for my dream and/or desire?
- Are there groups in-person or online where I can connect with “my people”?
- Are there events near me or events online where I can connect with “my people”?
- If there are groups and events out there (and active!): How can I meet them? How can I do more with them?
- If there aren’t groups or events (or they aren’t active): How can I connect with these people more effectively? What isn’t working now or even existing now? What has worked for others or for myself in the past when meeting people alike?
Now, I want to hear who “your people” are! Comment below.
